Common Engine Damage

Damaged EGR Valve

Your EGR system is designed to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides produced by your engine. It does this by recirculating some of your exhaust through an air cooler and then back into your combustion chamber. This recirculation is facilitated by an EGR valve. Unfortunately, this valve has a habit of sticking open on a lot of engines. When this happens, far too much of your exhaust enters your combustion chamber, limiting the presence of oxygen. This leads to a rough idle, poor performance, and difficulty starting your engine. 

Blown Head Gasket

Your engine is separated into two parts. The first is your cylinder head, and the second is your cylinder block. These two pieces are connected using what’s called a head gasket. This gasket allows for your engine to expand and contract at certain temperatures. If your engine overheats for a prolonged period of time, this head gasket may blow up. Common symptoms of this type of engine damage include white smoke coming from your exhaust, extremely poor performance, and boiling coolant.
