Your drivetrain is a complex series of axles, bearings, and gears that allow power to be transferred from your engine to your wheels. Although they don’t need maintenance as often as other heavy-duty vehicle components, they still need to be inspected and maintained on a fairly regular basis. Here at IBEX Diesel Repair, we perform drivetrain services of all kinds. Whether you need new bearings or a new differential cover, you can count on us to provide the services you and your truck deserve.
Critical Drivetrain Components Explained
Differentials
Your differential is one of your heavy-duty vehicle’s most critical components. Using carefully tuned gearing, your differential takes power from your driveshaft and transfers it to your wheels. Depending on the type of differential you have, power may be equally distributed to both wheels or be reliant on the path of least resistance.
Transmission
Your transmission is an extremely important part of your drivetrain. It’s made up of a series of gears that are designed to optimize the power of your engine. In purely rear-wheel drive setups, your transmission is directly connected to your driveshaft. For heavy-duty vehicles with selectable drive modes, your transmission will be paired with a transfer case, which is then connected to your driveshaft in sequence.
Driveshafts and Axles
Your driveshafts and axles connect your transmission, differentials, and wheels to each other. They’re essentially the highway that your engine’s power travels along. Since they’re always spinning, they require constant lubrication. Axles generally reside within the same housing as differentials and, as such, use the same lubricant. Driveshafts, on the other hand, use greased bearings to eliminate friction.
