Heavy-duty brakes are usually a lot more complex than what can be found on regular commuter cars. Rather than using fluid to compress brake calipers, heavy-duty trucks used compressed air. Although these systems are very effective, their complexity makes them more prone to damage than traditional fluid-based systems. Air setups have extra components like air compressors, leveling valves, airbags, and a wide variety of sensors. All of which experience wear and tear and must be inspected regularly. If you need heavy-duty brake services, give us a call, and we’ll book you an appointment for service. For all your heavy-duty brake needs, IBEX Diesel Repair has your back.
Symptoms of a Bad Brake Setup
Loud Screeching Brakes
If your brakes are very loud, you may need new brake pads. When your air setup compresses your caliper, your caliper pushes two large brake pads into your rotor. If these pads are worn down, the only thing left making contact with your rotor is the metal back plate of your pads, hence the screeching sounds. We highly recommend bringing your truck in for service if you hear this to avoid further damage. If there aren’t any brake pads left, your calipers may end up digging into your rotor, meaning you’d have to replace the calipers as well.
Pulling to One Side
If your truck pulls hard to one side when braking, one of your front brakes is most likely malfunctioning. This pulling generally happens when one brake provides more stopping power than the other. If this happens, we highly recommend you bring your truck in for service. Even if you feel as though your truck still stops reliably, it won’t for very long. Since one brake isn’t working, the other has to compensate. This puts the remaining brake under a significant amount of stress and may cause it to fail.
